ALUMNI SIGHTINGS

MAY 2007

-ALUMNI NEWS: Ballard graduate Jayme (Wedge) Woogerd received high honors for her senior season at Bowdoin College- great job Jatme-- and best of success in your post-college years.

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College softball players Jayme Woogerd
(Seattle, Wash.) and Julia Jacobs (Ridgewood, N.J.) have earned New
England Small College Athletic Conference Second-Team honors in
All-League selections announced late last week.

Woogerd closed out one of the most successful careers in school history
with an outstanding senior campaign. Bowdoin's first-baseman led the
team in several offensive categories, including batting average (.358),
runs scored (34), hits (49) and triples (5). For her career, the
Seattle, Washington native set the school record for runs scored (94),
while finishing second all-time in hits (157) and stolen bases (32).

My daughter, Kimber Grady, completed 4 year's intercollegiate rowing when she completed the Opening Day regatta in Seattle for Willamette University (Salem, OR). She rowed in both the eight-man and 4-man boats for all four years-- and occasionally in the 2-man boat when a shell could be borrowed. She returns to Seattle to begin preparations for pursing a career as a Physician's Assistant.

As of May last year, 3 other players were playing softball:
Gretchen Grey at Edmonds Community College- and   Carly Helm and Alyssa Meyer, both at Shoreline. I have not heard from them- I do not know if they played this year.

MARCH 2007-

Several alumni attended the March 30th game against Eastlake. 2002 grads Andrea Pena  and Heidi Burgi posed with John Kunkel, father of another 2003 grad, Allie Kunkle. Also attending, but not photed, Cindy Burnett, 2001 grad.

MAY 2006- I have updates on the 3 players that I know of who are playing softball. Jayme Woogerd, (2003) had a banner year hitting .376 as a junior for Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine). While the school had an off year, Jayme lead, or was second, on the team in many categories. Her stats can be found on the Bowdoin stats homepage.  Three of last year's players reported in: Gretchen Grey is having a good year at Edmonds Community College hitting around .337 and playing the outfield. Carly Helm is playing left field and hitting around .300 for Shoreline (and was celebrating her first college home run recently). Ballard 2005 teammate Alyssa Meyer is also playing for Shoreline this year. Finally, I guess I could mention that my daughter, Kimber (2003), was recently elected captain of the Willamette Crew team when she returns next year as a senior. Kimber rows in the Varsity eight, the Varsity 4, and the Varsity light-4.

DECEMBER 2005: A short update from Carly Helm:

Carly, Kristen and Allysa are playing for Shoreline CC and are doing well. They have competed in "fall ball" competitions in Aberdeen and Wenatchee, being successful as a team and individually. The coach is getting the team oriented towards a competition in Arizona this March.

================================================================================================

This is a new page devoted to BHS alumni who are still playing competitive softball. Currently we are aware of only two players who are playing at the post-high school level: Jayme Woogerd, starting first-baseman for Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine)- And Lindsay Ohm, second base for Willamette University (Salem. Oregon).  If you neither know, or are, another alum still playing softball (intercollegiate, AAU, semi-pro... whatever) let me know.

Lindsay Ohm
Class of 2004

Lindsay is a freshman at Willamette University- and is playing infield, usually second base for the Bearcats. Willamette is having a very successful season and and be followed here: http://www.willamette.edu/athletics/softball/index.htm Her father reports "Lindsay is not batting much this year for sure, but is seeing fairly good playing time, starting at second base early in the year, followed by outfield, primarily left field recently.  The Willamette coach asked Lindsay to switch her batting approach from right-handed to left-handed over last winter's off-season and this has been a big challenge for her (hence the low at-bat total in stats).  Because she is a quick runner and a good glove, he is finding opportunities for her to play.  Because her bat is still developing from the left side, she is often pinch hit for by stronger hitters.  I've heard from several parents and coaches that it takes a year to get comfortable at the plate when you switch sides hitting, so I expect (and I'm sure Lindsay predicts) she'll be better this summer and next year for the Bearcats!"

Jayme (Wedge) Woogerd
Class of 2003

The Wedge, to understate the obvious, is having an incredible season. I was emailed her stats as summarized below. I understand that Coach Lowe is taking full credit! Those that wish to follow Jayme directly can either subscribe to the Bowdoin softball mailing list (send an email to : softball@list.bowdoin.edu or follow the team on the Bowdoin softball web page: http://www.bowdoin.edu/hoplite/displays?sport=21&method=dspSport Jayme also starts for the nationally-ranked Bowdoin Polar Bears as a highly-recruited payer on the Ice Hockey Team.
